About Us

From Australia to Tighnabruaich

Tighnabruaich welcomed Greg and Gill Robson, the new owners of The Royal an Lochan Hotel in May 2018. Greg and Gill packed up their lives in Australia, left their jobs, family and friends to live out their dream of owning a hotel in Scotland. For Gill, a move across oceans was not so significant given she is Scottish, originally from Kirkcaldy, and relocated to Australia 11 years ago, however for Greg  it was a new country, new vocation and most of all a new range of temperatures!!  Fortunately, the Gold Coast in Australia and Tighnabruaich have a few things in common including stunning water views, friendly people and fantastic food.

So how did these Aussies finish up at the Royal an Lochan Hotel in Tighnabruaich? Well, after many years of them both working for a vocational educational provider in Australia, Gill and Greg married in September 2017 and decided to start their married lives together on an adventure of a lifetime. After searching Scotland for a hotel with a proud history, beautiful views and something with potential, they were successful in purchasing their very own slice of paradise in Tighnabruaich.

Located less than 2 hours from Glasgow, The Royal an Lochan has 11 bedrooms with stunning views of the West Kyle of Bute and Inchmarnock. All bedrooms are well appointed and have bathrooms big enough to hide a small elephant! You can also observe these spectacular views of the Kyles of Bute whilst enjoying a hearty breakfast in the breakfast room or sipping on your favourite wine in The Deck Restaurant of an evening. Don't forget if you are only passing by Tighnabruaich for the day, an additional highlight of the hotel is "The Harbour Gallery" showcasing over 160 pieces of original artwork by Stuart Herd and Anne Hewitt located throughout.

Why not pop in and taste the Italian Aroma Barista Coffee that has been introduced to the hotel lounge? Since taking over Greg and Gill have re-energised the famous Shinty Bar, undertaken a beautification project in the gardens and have some exciting new projects for the locals to look out for. Greg and Gill encourage people from all over the world to stay at their beautiful hotel and are equally committed to their local community.

Although a new vocation for Greg, Gill is no stranger to hotels and has experiences in places such as Gleneagles and 5 star hotels across the world. After emigrating to Australia, Gill became the Head Teacher of Tourism, Hospitality and Events at a local college and, as a result, ensures staff training receives the highest priority at the hotel. Greg and Gill have two young enthusiastic staff, Georgia and Keanu from Australia as well as locals Miska and Alistair and have formed a formidable team in a very short space of time. All staff are committed to high quality customer service and making their guests feel like they're at home.

Since arriving, two of Gill and Greg's children have joined the team, Stacie runs a fun Hotel Quiz every second Wednesday night from 7.30pm and Struan, an up and coming chef, who learnt his trade in a 5 Star Hotel in Melbourne, Australia.

At The Royal an Lochan the staff are dedicated to ensuring that all guests enjoy every second of their stay, ensuring everyone leaves with a want to return again and again.

Transport to the Hotel is possible in a multitude of ways. There is ample free parking at the Hotel. The Hotel is on the main road (A8003) into Tighnabruaich, the bus stops in front of the Hotel and there are also six fully serviced free moorings directly in front of the Hotel. It is approximately 2 hours from Glasgow and 3 hours from Edinburgh to the Hotel by car whether travelling via the picturesque Loch Lomond or via the Gourock to Dunoon ferry. We often have cyclists stay with us and are happy to store bicycles within the Hotel at night. The Hotel is also on the Cowal Way walking route making it a popular stay for walkers. The Portvadie to Tarbert ferry is only 4 miles from the Hotel which provides easy access to the islands of Arran, Gigha and Islay as well as towns such as Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Campbeltown. The Hotel is 14 miles from Colintrive, where you can catch the ferry to Bute. So whether by car, boat, bus, bike, ferry or on foot the Royal an Lochan is a hub of the Argyll and Bute area as well as being a great place to stay.

So if you are looking for a tranquil getaway in one of the most beautiful spots on the West Coast, with a wee touch of Down Under please come and visit Tighnabruaich and do everything you want to or do nothing at all.

The Royal Hotel in Tighnabruaich is situated on the shores of the Kyles of Bute overlooking the Isle of Bute.

The building dates from 1865 and more recently it was converted from 21 bedrooms to 11 luxury en-suite bedrooms and since 2006 the hotel has traded under the name of an Lochan. However, to combine the best qualities of both past and present, the hotel was re-named The Royal an Lochan in 2010.

Maybe the secret ingredient is that Tighnabruaich is the end of the road and the end of the rainbow. It's no great distance from anywhere, but it is light years away from modern urban life? Where you can do everything or nothing at all.

Recent History

After searching Scotland for a hotel with a proud community passionate about their history, beautiful views and something with potential, Gill and Greg were successful in purchasing their very own slice of paradise in Tighnabruaich.

When you visit the hotel you will see its historic name in the mosaic tiled floor at the hotel's entrance. This floor was laid during World War Two by Italian prisoners of war, leaving a snippet of history for future guests to admire.
